Christmas Outakes

We've been pretty busy around these parts.

Getting the house together for the holidays and rushing to mail off last minute gifts.

This year once again I have FAILED to send out our Christmas cards in time!! ugh!!! This bothers me to no end.

The little one was not in the mood for photos, so for just about all of them he's sprawled out or crying. Next year I'll do better....I pray.

Sneak Peak

Hey guys!!Sorry I've been MIA for the last couple days.

We just got back from picking up my sister from college. I am currently glued to youtube looking for the best ways to maintain this hair. I am about ready to take it out. But I said I would keep it in until the end of December.

I've also been busy planing and setting up a few things for DNA spot. It's really exciting. We've gotten so much positive feedback and have a few styling appointments on the book!!! We've done one photoshoot already to help with our website and promotional materials. Here's a sneak peak of a few of them.

Christmas Genius

I'm feeling a little like a Christmas genius. I am 98% finished with Christmas shopping. The little one and I read a story from Christmas Stories for Bedtime every night; and fingers get cut off if the Christmas radio station is disrupted.

We didn't go overboard with gifts this year, but the little one is old enough for us to see him actually enjoy it. So I want it to be a special holiday for my family!

I hope you guys are faring well this holiday season.

The husband and I are going to do our first video post soon. We have a story to share.

Thinking about bringing your kiddies along for the Christmas shopping ride? Think again!!

The little one (I love him to death) was an absolute nightmare and the stores.

If you look closely at the pictures above the first one he is running around the dressing room and the second one he is laid out on the floor (that smile you see is covering a bit of frustration).

I hate public floors; I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I freak out when he's on the floor. I believe he's aware of this fact because whenever we go out his first response is to fall out...on the floor.

Am I to blame? okay, a little. I forgot his stroller and we may have been out during his nap time....yea, we were definitely shopping through his nap time. BIG MISTAKE....HUGE!

Today we're doing things a bit differently, he's napping now and once he awakes. I will do my best to tie him to the stroller, so I will never forget it.

The husband wasn't the most thrilled with me starting outfit post again. He gets tired of taking the pictures and he won't admit it, but he gets embarrassed when people are around. I'll say, "babe, let's take pictures at the square!" he's like, umm...let's just do them at the house. Sometime I make him do it anyway--anything for a good picture right?!

I've worn this skirt before with white. But I'm feeling the all black with the focus on bright colors. I will ONLY wear this skirt with black tights, because I do think it's a bit short for bare legs.

I've also been sporting this hair for a few weeks now and I'm determined to keep it until then end of the month and redo it for my birthday (Jan. 3). My sister complains that I take it out too early (usually two weeks). After my hair gets tangled and rough and I'm tired of "patting my weave" I take it out. But since I'm committed to doing better; I've been glued to you tube watching how to care for your hair. My favorite channel is beautybyjj's her hair is always amazing and her make up is flawless!!!

I'm off to get a few oils (argan and moroccan oils are supposed to be really good) and a shampoo (everyone has been talking about herbal essence hello hydration). Wish me luck!

We put our tree up last evening. It was the first time we've decorated a tree as a family and I loved every minute of it.Some may find it annoying but I am a bit of a Christmas fanatic.

I love it, it's my absolute favorite holiday. I wouldn't let us begin decorating unless the Christmas music was on blast, fireplace lit and everyone's in the holiday spirit.

Growing up, for the most part, we didn't have a tree, we didn't cut one down, we didn't retrieve the ornaments from the attic or basement, we didn't have eggnog in the house, presents weren't hid around the house, we didn't wake up early to open presents.....we didn't do alot.

For my family things will be very different. My childhood Christmas saga explains why I tend to go a little overboard around this holiday season. I want my family to do it all.

So raise your coffee mugs, cups of water, glasses of milk, or whatever you are drinking at the moment and let's cheers to making this holiday season it's the best yet!!!

Remember it is the most wonderful time of the year!!!!

*Elf is starting to run on TV! If you are that last person in the world who hasn't seen it.....PLEASE WATCH! It's sure to bring holiday cheer!

I'm back....for real

We spent our thanksgiving weekend in Miami and we had a great time. It was so nice to meet the cousins for the first time and realize how much the little ones have grown.

My favorite part of the holiday was the fundraiser we put on for my Uncle. We all had to wear hats and it was fun to see everyone dress up.

My dress had a few malfunctions--the zipper broke and the cut was so low (hence the heart covering the boobs), but I still liked my outfit. I was nervous about the "roast" I had to give my uncle, but everyone seemed to enjoy it so, bullet dodged.

Just seeing how he is doing has brought my soul a great deal of peace. It's always hard to watch someone you love experience pain they don't deserve. We pray for him every night. We had worship the Friday night and talked about suffering for Christ's sake; how we should see it as a privilege rather than a punishment. I

It's a hard pill to swallow, who want's to suffer? But I imagine it's a little like being married. Marriage is a sacrifice and sometimes putting the husband (and the little one) first can be viewed as suffering, but you love him SO much it's not a punishment but a privilege to take care of who you love.

♥ I can't believe I missed it

Isn't this tree neat? We were in Greenville, SC

Last week Tuesday my little one turned 17 months. I missed it and putting nothing on the blog about it. The husband was preaching in SC over the weekend and as they introduced him, they said, "Pastor Johnson's son is 17 months." And that is what reminded me. ....horrible, I know.

He's still as wonderful and sweet as the day he came home, but I'm not gonna lie, he is a handful. I mean like how many times is he going to say no!!

And his favorite toys? Whatever he's not supposed to be playing with it. Phones, Computers, Bibles--the more valuable the better.

He learns so quickly and all the things you wish you didn't do he picks up the fastest. And what's with him running to strangers.

He loves everybody, so the people he doesn't like worry me. You know how they say babies can tell good people for bad people. Regardless I find it a bit unsettling that he's running to every Tom, Dick and Harry/

Raising him is fun and stressful--and I love every bit of it.

C. Chore that you hate: Sweeping!! I absolutely hate sweeping. I don't know what it is but it takes me forever to get around to cleaning our floors.

MommyStyles: Wake Up Call

Last week we had a date night (a well over due date night). Thanks to my sister this is what I wore.

She called me as I was getting dressed and asked what I was wearing I told her tights, a skirt and a shirt.

"No" she said. just like that. "NO"

Then she talked about dressing nicer for date night. Like "husband-nice" and then I realized I have no recollection of the last time I dressed for my husband.

My sister went on to school me about dressing classy and sassy for date night. She told me when you go shopping and he points out the things he likes on you...that is what you wear for a date night. After talking her through my closet we settled on this baby doll dress it's sweet, fun and it's not shown above but it's a cutout back! The husband loved it so I say I made the right choice.

It was a wake up call for me...I have definitely been slacking.

I'm glad to be back in the blog world!

But the time away was well spent.

Over the weekend we took the little one to the pumpkin patch and we had such a great time. I couldn't help but think of how much he's grown.

Last year at the pumpkin patch he wasn't walking and spent most of his time in the stroller. He has grown so much in year.

Ok, quick commercial---
This makes me think of age descriptors (yes, I know completely off topic). Before I had a child I was so annoyed when I asked someone, "how old is your child?" and they would respond with the 12 months, 18 months, 20 months, etc. I mean 1 is 1 and 2 is 2 right? wrong. My little one has changed so much in the short span from 12 months to 16 months.

Ok, back to the topic--
I love the pumpkin patch. I sometimes stress myself out wondering if I'm exposing my son to enough. When I was younger I went to the pumpkin patch with my school but never with my family and I want it to be different for my son.

I want him to look forward to our field trips and learn not only his studies but also have cultural and social knowledge.I want him to know what I know and more.

After leaving my little sister at college. I felt like a schoolgirl all over again--so I dressed like one.The girls in college have such amazing style. Just driving through the campus it's like a little fashion show. I don't remember looking as cute when I was in college. Must be something in the milk....

I know you've been seeing a lot of this purple purse lately. Best gift from my husband's grandmother!! I love it and I love her!! I wear it with just about everything.

I won't be posting next week.I'm taking a bit of a blog fast (for 1 week).

I think blogging and just being apart of the blog world has become too much of a priority in my life.
It's gotten to the point where I actually start looking down on my life because it doesn't match up to all the beautiful pictures I see on the web.

I'm starting to get too occupied with taking perfect pictures than actually living the perfect life with my beautiful son and wonderful husband.

I will definitely be back!

Blogging has wonderfully enriched my life, but I don't want blogging to be my life.

Weekend Recap

If you follow me on twitter you know about my visit to Huntsville, Alabama.It's been a while since we've been back and a part of me misses the place. Here are a few photo highlights from the trip!

I was so happy to visit my little sister in college (Oakwood University--my old Alma mater). Hanging with her and her friends made me feel like I was a college girl again, which I absolutely loved.

I also attended a Transformative Justice conference which I absolutely loved!!! I learned so much about the immigration laws and how they are affecting our nation. We watched a screening of The Second Cooler which nearly had me a tears....

I also met (for the first time) another ALINKA!!! yup!! Her name is Alinka Robinson!! I was ecstatic--you would've thought I won the lottery. She told me that she really wanted to meet me because she would answer the phone at work and people in Huntsville were like. Hey, Alinka I remember we talked last year.....she was like "ummm, no it's a different Alinka." Not only did she have the name; she had the history of our name. Alinka is the american form of an original Russian name.

We ended our trip in Birmingham for the husband's Character Construction seminar. We had a great time at Ephesus church and the lovely Tancia shared these photos with me!

It was lots of fun, but now I'm very tired and on this rainy day I am trying my best to do anything but my projects due...TODAY!! Okay, okay...I'll get back to work.

I know it's been a while since we last spoke, we've been crazy busy on this side of life.

The little one is in absolutely everything!! But I love that he's starting to absorb so many things in the world. I've also been working on an upcoming project with my sister, yup DNA will be back and live very soon.

Today, I've jumped on the Bloggers Do it Better bandwagon and our challenge (my first challenge) is animal prints. My closet is severely slacking in this department so I raided my sister and mom's closet to create this ensemble (shirt=mom's jeans=sister's the purse however is mine--my husband's grandmother gave it to me and I LOVE it).

When I asked the husband to guess the challenge, he said, "To wear something you'd never wear" It made me laugh, but he's right, I wouldn't normally wear this, but I love the look--it made me feel like a rockstar and now I'm thinking it may be time to expand my style just a bit.

Fashion Fun

Last week I went to a fashion show at Justins.It was a really fun night My favorite outfit wasn't on the runway but in the crowd. I managed to steal a photo.

She is rocking that hat!My sister and I ALWAYS dream about going to fashion week and catching all the great shows, but for right now this will do. It was fun and the food was great!

I also ran into my friend Micha also know as radio personality Ml Six! I was so happy to see her!!!

Over the weekend I attended a meeting for another photo shoot the sister and I are working on and this is what I wore.

Styling is so much fun for me. It really is a great outlet for creativity.

I can't wait to share the DIY bow post coming up this week! They are SO easy to make and so versatile. I am a complete failure when it comes to sewing. Yes, that sounded harsh. But it's true and sometimes you have to be real with yourself! I am the worst at it. There's something about the needle and thread that does not connect with my brain. I am actually really sad about it. I would LOVE to be able to sew.

Anyway, so when I say it's easy, it really is.

watching HIM move

Our weekend was pretty busy. If you follow me on twitter you know that we got lost going to church. The husband had to preach and we must have made it minutes before he entered the pulpit.

I love visiting new churches when the husband preaches, but I do get nervous for him. If the church gets quiet I'm always wondering if they are understanding.

The husband is not like your regular black preachers he's more of a teaching-preacher; so he can get pretty deep from time to time, explaining the concepts he's studied and researched. {he's like that off the pulpit as well. You can say something simple like, I wonder why they.... and I promise you he has at least a 5-10 minute explanation)

As the husband was ending his sermon and I had already made a mental list of critiques to share with him on the ride home (annoying right? praise God he still loves me). And as he made his appeal a young lady stood up, came to front, dedicated her life to Christ and joined the church.

In that moment I realized the Lord was working while the husband was preaching. When I thought the church was too quiet, it was because they were listening instead of shouting. It's such a blessing to watch the Holy Spirit move.

Because it's like that for me, in those quiet moments I hear Him clearer and louder.

I still get a few goosebumps thinking about it and I'm hoping to carry this thought with me all week.

Riding Dirty

The Husband has three major loves (outside the little one and myself of course): Ministry, Animals (right now it's a fish obsession) and Cars. Anyone who knows the husband knows he loves cars.

Hence the Car Show post.

It was like watching a kid in a candy store, well a kid in a candy store that couldn't eat any of the candy........bad analogy.

It was like watching kids on Christmas morning---let me try again.

It was like watching someone who really likes cars go to a car show!

He went to the owners and asked questions about the engine and body work. Some of them even looked at me as if I could understand anything they talked about. I thought about just interrupting, "It's okay, don't worry about trying...I fit the stereotype"

The Husband related history on almost every car on the lot and why he liked some more than others. My criteria on the other hand was much simpler, my favorites were the shiniest.

♥ Deep, Deep, Deep as the ocean BLUE

This is the face I got after dropping in the fizzle tub colors I picked up at Target the other day.

If you only knew how excited I was when I saw this in the store (yes, I get excited easily). It was .99 and I just knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that when the little one saw the color he would yell with glee!

You don't understand--I've had it for about a week now, because I was saving it for a "special" bath day. And today was the day....the day I realized my son could not care less about tablets that bring color, make no sound, and can not be eaten (and yes, he tried).

After the Great Disappointment of bath time 2011; I vow to continue to wait for special days to change the color of the water in the tub.

I will be persistent, relentless, unwavering and one day, one glorious day, my son, surrounded by color changing water will look at me and scream so loud, everyone near and far will hear of the joy he holds.

And from that day forward everyone will remember, remember the day colored water changed the world forever.
...Oh that glorious day.

MommyStyles: Over-sized

I am back to the curly fro and my timing couldn't be more perfect because the weather is a bit cooler, which I am really excited about.

Jackets, blazers, sweaters, and coats are my thing, I'm a bit of a fanatic--the husband hates it. He says I'm hiding all the clothes, but I'd like to think of it as accenting the clothes while remaining comfortable.

This very old Charlotte Russe sun dress alone is really cute, but the Gap over-sized jean jacket adds a nice balance to the femininity of the dress. I scored the clutch from my sister (your trash my treasure!) and I really like it (so you can't have it back!).I like over-sized clothes but sometimes they make me look more frumpy than cute. So I make sure to pair over-sized pieces with something fitted to retain shape. Like an over-sized shirt with fitted jeans, etc. How do you feel about the over-sized trend? yay or nay?

MommyStyles: Yellow Pants

I picked up these yellow high waist-ed wide legs from the thrift store months ago and this is my second time putting them on.

I really love them, but you've really gotta be in the mood to stroll down the streets with bright yellow pants. The other time I've worn them was in Florida for my sister's birthday dinner (not pictured but I wore it with the blue top).

I love pairing them with stripes or bright blue in the summer, but I'm looking forward to wearing them in fall. I'm thinking they'd be really cute with a white cable knit sweater and a short trench. (side note: which reminds me, I really want to share with you my fall looks...that's coming soon. )

Contentment

This past weekend was pretty full. The little one was waking up throughout the night with a stuffy nose. I was a delegate for my church during our constituency meeting. And I'm still trying my best to function as if I haven't been loosing sleep.

Even with the busy schedule and all the crazy things that have been happening, I feel content.

I know that doesn't sound like much, but contentment is something I've never really experienced. I'm the type of person that always wants more or something different--for me the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side.

But for the first time in my life I can truly say--I am content. Content with God's unfailing presence in my life. Content with the beauty and wonder in my little baby boy. Content with my marriage and the support and love from the husband.

Today I am full of contentment.

Dear Husband,

The little one wanted me to let you know, you totally rock as a father.

He asked me if you had done this before and when I told him no, he didn't believe me.

He wondered where I found you, but I told him you found me.

He said his favorite part of the day is when you come home from a job. At first, I was a little jealous but then I realized--it was my favorite part too.

He said when he grows up he wants to be just like you. I told him that you want him to be better.

I hope you know he loves you sooooo much.....almost as much as I do.

American Sweetheart

While the in laws were in town we got a chance to spend a lot of time together. One evening we went out for ice cream to a place called American Sweetheart. I loved the atmosphere and the people, but best of all--the ice cream! We split three scoops of peach ice cream.

But next time I go I want to try a different flavor and maybe add a few of those delicious toppings.

It was a sweet night. Ice cream has a way of quieting the world, all in a spoonful.

A Bit of Everything

Highs and Lows of my Labor day weekend

High: Traveling to South Carolina with my mom and my sister

Low: Traveling to South Carolina with my sister (she was sick and now we’re all sneezing, coughing, dripping and all the wonderful adjectives that accompany this plague)

High: We had SO much fun learning our love language at our church's family retreat

Low: An elderly member telling me I need to wear a sweater with my dress, because shoulders are for the husband’s eyes only (actually this could be a high, it was the funniest thing I’d heard all weekend. I love old folks!)

High: Celebrating my little sister’s birthday while she’s home from college.

MommyStyles: A Mom Dress

That's exactly what the husband called this when I brought it home from the thrift store.

I'm not sure if it's an insult or his way of saying, "that would be perfect for MommyStyles" (I'm pretty sure it's the first). However, I really like the dress and I'm a mom, so I guess it fits.I had to take it in at the top and I had a serious debate with my sister on whether or not I should shorten it. I think it would be really cute right above the knee and since I'm so short it might give my legs some length. My sister argued that though it would be cute short it would be unique long.

What are your thoughts?

I really do enjoy being a mother.

But there are moments when I selfishly put my wants before his.

Like watching something on TV while he's napping (that I know he shouldn't be watching...ok, I probably shouldn't be watching, but Lifetime sucks you in man, it sucks you in)then he'll wake up early and instead of turning it off I'll finish the movie.

I then begin to rationalize it in my head.

Well, it's not that bad of a movie...people have affairs all the time... or, I haven't watched TV all month I deserve these two hours...

It's hard to say, but the truth is, in that moment--I choose me over my son. And that thought, that idea, breaks my heart.

The Husband and I have been reading Character Construction for our devotion and a line that stays on my mind is:

"Self is the enemy we most need to fear."

Motherhood pushes me to rely on God like I never have before. It's only through Him that self is removed.

It's only through him that it's no longer me, but Mother first.

The little one turned 15 months last week and he's mastering words like apple, obey and gentle...not sure how they relate, but they seem to be three of his favorites.

"Uh-oh" for him right now applies to every situation. I change his diaper "uh-oh" I help him up the stairs "uh-oh" The phone rings "uh-oh" He stares at me "uh-oh". It's cute when we're at home but when we're around others, they're like, "what happened?!"

we've got to work on that.

Now he is starting to have temper tantrums and saying "no!" to me when he's doing something he shouldn't. It was a little tough switching to discipline mode. I spent most of the time convincing the husband,"He doesn't know he's doing anything wrong!" Well there's no denying it now, he definitely knows.

Whether disciplining, playing or teaching it's so much fun being around him. Like right now as I'm typing he's dancing to the sounds of a skill saw from outside. I've told him it's not music, but he seems to believe it is.

See, I've already got a good laugh in for the day! Go baby!

I am seriously considering driving to the Elle office and slapping every single one of the employees. This just doesn't make any sense.

It's been a while since my heart has stopped like this.

Ok, so this is weird but over the weekend I had this crazy dream about a family of big-foots that me and the husband had to do karate to protect...yeah, I know weird. Anyway I didn't know how I even got that picture in my head. Looking at this spread again, especially the second photo, now I see. This spread has not only flooded my thoughts but it has infiltrated my subconscious.

I wonder if the little one will learn to use a camera before he learns to potty.

I was telling a friend of mine that I don't think a day has gone by without at least one picture of him. If not my camera then my phone. He's my favorite thing/one to photograph.

I cherish photos more than ever for the memories. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't take more with my father. I thought it was lame...Why would I want to take a picture with him?! Friends only!! Now I'm like a scavenger tracking down photos of the two of us.

Now I take pictures with everyone all the time. Especially my loved ones.

If anything were to ever happen to me I'm hoping, well I know the little one will have enough photos to see how much I love him.

Ok, no more sad talk...

I've been feeling so in love with my family that I think I'm ready for another. Not right now, but soon. Both the husband and I grew up with siblings and cousins and we couldn't imagine a house with one child.

There are many people who feel you have to be rich to have more than one child. But I didn't grow up with lots of money and I would not exist if my mother decided she wasn't rich enough after her first child.

The way I look at it, be smart, but don't be unrealistic--you don't need to be a millionaire to have babies. It doesn't seem as if most of those millionaire babies grow up to be great people anyway.

We spent a nice afternoon with the in-laws yesterday. The little one gets so happy and energetic when they're around. He loves his grandparents. We had an early dinner then I convinced everyone of our dire need to stop by my favorite cupcake spot

Then the husband had a dire need for Pet Smart (he is determined to get his fish tank up and running again). The little one loves it in there and I'm already cringing at the thought of all the critters I'll find in the house.

The in-laws had a follow up dire need to check out an appliance store.

So in the end all of our dire needs were met: I got my cupcake, The husband saw his animals, The in-laws sorted through appliances, and the little one got put in a dryer...see? everyone's happy!

Remember that dress I talked about here, well I finally got a chance to wear it before the summer ended! I am not in love with the photos the husband took, but I couldn't let the moment pass without sharing.

I love this vintage dress! It's so simple, classy and a little sassy!

oh and the little one's mohawk is gone!*tear

The husband was cleaning it up and it ended up lopsided (side note: remember my Barber comment. ahem) Anyhoo I miss the mohawk and I want it back.

But he's still cute with any hairstyle. I'm using cocoa butter to get rid of the scar on his forehead. I know boys will be boys, but I'd like to keep face perfect for as long as I can.

Any other remedies?

4. I spent most of my beach time staring at the spot; hoping, praying, wishing to see a little turtle...no luck, but I'm happy they are safe for now.

5. Out of all the neat places in Panama City Beach to eat we ended up at Longhorn Steakhouse for my sister's birthday dinner. After one bite of that sweet potato--there was no complaining.

6. Headed to Hava Java for our morning Vanilla Chai (the owner used to be the VP of Virgin Records). The owner had all these cool photos and signatures of celebrities he'd worked with and then we saw this sheet on the wall. Pretty funny.

My favorite time of our vacation was the morning we had worship at the beach. It was such a beautiful and perfect place for worship.

I'm not the biggest beach person, but the weather, water everything... absolutely perfect. After worship we strolled down the beach and admired God's work.

I'm home now and having so much fun with the little one. I've been showering him with kisses but my heart was a little sad that I didn't hear him screaming "MAMA!" when he saw me.

Waking Up To You...

I am in Florida celebrating my sister's birthday and though I am having such a great time just being with her-- I do miss waking up with these two.

I know people look down on putting your little ones in bed with you, but I love falling asleep and waking up with him...he doesn't love it as much. He actually sleeps better alone, so I've respected his space, until he gets up and I hear him call for mama (okay, most days he calls for da da--I find this very annoying, seeing that I spend every minute with him) I grab him and give him his milk in our bed.

I also feel pretty horrible that he is still sleeping in his playpen...I know horrible right?!(insert story here: we are currently living in my in-laws house in GA we've been considering, planning, about to-move for a while now; so we haven't set up his crib yet, thinking the move will happen soon--I'm over that now and I want to fully live where ever I am, because tomorrow is never promised.) I have been bugging the husband to set it up, but he's dragging his feet.

So this is my way to make it up to the little one. All day, Every day mama and da da's bed access!

I love these moments.

Weeping May Endure

This is my favorite tree/spot in ~~all of the world~~ our neighborhood.It's so serene and therapeutic. I would take more photos here if I thought I could pose without fear of getting hit by golf balls (my head is a magnet for tennis balls, basketballs, Frisbees, anything of potential danger).

I was so happy the little one fell asleep in the car which prompted the husband to want to take a little drive. In those few moments under that tree in the sun I felt peace.

The devil has been busy attacking our family. I've never known humility and grace like I've come to know it these past few years.

Money has been so tight, there are many things we've had to do without, many things we've created for substitutes, many things we've simply had to let go...

But God is so real! {doing my hallelujah dance} He has been so good to us; I can't help but lift my hands in praise of Him because He's worthy and supplies all our needs.

At the women’s retreat I attended last month I sat in a seminar entitled Marriage Convenience or Covenant?
It was so insightful I learned so much. One of my favorite takeaways was to Remember The Number 1.

•(once a) Season hotel stay (even if it’s in your same city, just stay in a hotel for the night)

We’ve been doing our best to follow through with this, because I think it’s such a great idea.
And so far we’ve been working in our weekly date night, even if we can’t get a sitter for the little one we’ll put him to bed and have a late night dessert date.
This night was his and her desserts. I love our date nights.

I spent most of it just thinking about how short life is. Over the weekend one of my old friends/classmate passed away and I am in just in complete shock.

It's so true what they say, "here today, gone tomorrow"

Which is why I really want to make sure to reach out to those who are still with us and let them know I love them. I think it's so much better for those who are alive to hear how much we love and appreciate them than to share it with others at a funeral.

One elderly lady in my church would always say that she wanted to be alive for her funeral. I thought it was so silly, but it makes so much sense.

Life is short and when they're gone, that's it their gone. And all we wish for is more time, more pictures, more video, more memories...

Love them while they're here.

BeauStyles: Day 5

I could never put in words the excitement the husband had when he realized today was the last day for BeauStyles.

I think he ended on a good note.

Here's what we've learned:

Me
-Nobody knows your closet like you

-I desperately need casual/dress pants (all I have is work and jeans)

-A huge appreciation for bloggers who post outfits everyday (this was exhausting)

-The husband is a good sport

-I really need more shoes

The Husband (he went deep on me...)
-Putting together an outfit is such a bigger process. I usually choose my clothes by process of elimination-is it clean? does it match? Yes and Yes. You win! Outfits for her have to do more than just match it has to make a statement.

-Any item can break an outfit. Just because it's pretty on the hanger doesn't mean it's pretty altogether.

-It's okay to experiment. When you fail you learn.

-Clothes have to speak to who you are, that way you don't end up looking like everyone else.

-She really needs more shoes

I think we may have taken a little step back today. I understand the color combination but the styles are a bit different to me. He himself wasn't completely happy with the choice; it was kind of assembled with a bit of frustration.

I think he's just about ready for this week to end.

I can't blame him, ~~sometimes~~ most times my closet seems full of nothing. Now he knows why it takes me so long to get ready.

The husband is still struggling with his back but managed to take a few shots for me in today's outfit.

I think he's getting the hang of this. I like this ensemble, I had already put it together in my head but hadn't gotten around to wearing it. I probably wouldn't have added the yellow belt, but it's cute.

Not sure why it's to the side, but he specifically said that's where it should go and this week he's the boss.

I'm not a big fan of taking my own photos. I ~~almost~~ always do a bad job at it. It took me forever just to get the few shots below. Most of them were blurry.

Unfortunately, The husband has been in bed most of the day suffering from back pain. I hate seeing him like this because every move hurts so much and there's nothing I can do to help. It seems like everything we try: ice, icy hot, hot tub, back brace...NOTHING works and I feel so bad for him.

He did however get a chance to pick out an outfit for me last night while laying on the floor. It's kinda funny because he's really into it now. He even said, "I want to use your unique pieces because you always dress so regular." Now he thinks he's a fashion guru. He would put things together and say, "do you like it?" But I couldn't answer; it's against the rules-- I had to remind him it's not what I like it's what you like.

Luckily I really like this look. I'm not in love with the shoes he chose (that I'm struggling to show you in the photos above) but it's not his fault, he really has nothing to work with. I am STRUGGLING in the shoe department.

This morning I missed my wake up time. I usually like to get up with the husband to see him off to work and have a little devotion before the little one awakes.
After he kissed my cheek goodbye I wondered if he forgot today was day one of beau styles. He's a man, I thought, OF COURSE HE DID!

Then I saw the outfit set aside for me in the bathroom. Sometimes, he is just the sweetest thing.

Now about this outfit, definitely not my cup of tea, but it's not horrible. I love the colors he put together.

He originally had a leopard print belt laid out for me, but it's a waist belt for me and doesn't fit around my hips. (I think I'm a bit thankful for that).

♥ First Haircut

Happy Sunday guys!

I know I don't usually post Sundays but I had to share these photos of the little one getting his first haircut.

I practically begged the husband for a mohawk and to take him to the barber. Both to which he initially said no.

But he started cutting his hair and appeased me by doing the mohawk (I had to admit he did a pretty good job) and after I took photos and had him walk around a bit.

The husband stopped and said,"Ok, so now I really like the look. It really fits his personality."

In the end he got to cut his sons' hair and I got the style I wanted. We both win!

A lot of the older people absolutely hate the style. Walking into church just about every adult stopped us with little comments, "What were you thinking?" "Who came up with this style?"

But the youth melted when they saw him, I don't think I've ever heard so many oooohhs and aawwwws.

The way I figure, The husband and I like it, so I just told those that don't--"how bout, you don't cut your kids' hair that way."

I know it's late but I didn't want the day to go by without a post (I know last week I left you hanging--sorry).

We just got back home from our date night. We really want to try and do them once a week even if it's just putting the baby to bed and eating dessert on the porch.

We saw Captain America and went out to eat.

The movie was ok, it's just so crazy how spiritualism has to be in EVERY MOVIE it's like, did we really need to add that element. anywho... I had fish tacos for dinner and I wasn't too impressed. They were okay, but not the best I've had.

All in all it was a great date night, mainly because it was just me and him and that's always a recipe for fun.

I'm sleepy! Goodnight.

Ever since the baby has been on the road with us, rest stops have been not only necessary but readily welcomed.

On our way home from FL we stopped at Cracker Barrel so the little one could walk around a bit and I could quench my French toast craving (so delicious).

While he was running around a lady asked how long he had been walking. And I couldn't believe it's only been 4 months.

In 4 mths this child went from steps to running, banging on doors to opening and closing them, pushing chairs to climbing on top of them...

He's conquered so many things in 4 months and I still have 4 month old tasks on my desk--undone!

I've got to do better. He's my inspiration!

Last Day Part I

The last day of our Florida trip the husband and I took the little one to beach. He didn't have too much fun. The beach wasn't too much fun for me either the day was dark and the beach looked dirty.

However, I was happy that he got to go and see the beach for the first time.

There are so many jewels I've gleamed from other bloggers. This world has opened up so many new things for me. This smoothie is one of my favorite jewels.

I chose ingredients from here and here , I also used a few strawberries and peaches instead of the pears (not a big fan of pears). It's become a morning routine for us (the husband and little one like it too)I love it.

Leave-baby-with-daddy phobia

Hey guys,

I just got back from a women's retreat in Jacksonville, FL.

The spiritual rejuvenation could not have come at a better time ( I have so many inspirational nuggets to share), but I did freak out just a bit, cause it was the longest I've been away from the little one.

Luckily they weren't too far away-the husband and the little one did a mini vacation in Florida (and yes, I was very jealous).

I must begin by saying the husband is the best Father in all the world, but I am very nervous about him taking care of the baby alone. I went crazy thinking about the little things he may forget (ie sunscreen, washing under his chin real good, sticking to his schedule, the list goes on...)

He hates when I annoy him with the details, but I don't think I am capable of stopping. I've been trying to convince him it's a legitimate physical condition.

How are you when you leave the babies with daddy?

I dressed the little one up for church and I couldn't help but step back and think of him in a few years in his uniform for school and I had a quick thought to change him into something different. But we were late and he did look cute.

I know mothers go crazy with finding the right schools for their children, so I'm happy I have a little more time before I'm one of them.

I'm savoring every moment with him. He is so wonderful.

Toasted Burnt Marshmallow Milkshake

I have been dying to try out this milkshake for over a year now. So after we made S'mores the other night we had left over marshmallows (the husband threatened to throw away, but I had sweeter plans for it).

The recipe called for lightly toasted marshmallows and fancy dancy yogurt, but I like mine burnt and I just skipped the yogurt and it was still good.

I loved it! Try it and tell me how you like it.

And let me know if the fancy dancy yogurt made a big difference.

Tuesday we got to meet the sweet and adorable Mr. Carter! He is sooo cute. It's literally unbearable.

Our yorkie is alot older and doesn't want to play with the little one as much. Her idea of a good time is laying on the couch with us, but Carter was running in the yard with the little one and it really warmed my heart.

I think we need a puppy for him.

I thought I'd share a few photos of this cute little dress I wore last weekend. I really love this dress. The details on the bust area and the pockets were the selling point for me. I found it at Target for like $20 and I thought it must have been priced wrong. But 20 was the right price and there was one left just waiting for me (or at least that is what I'd like to think).

It's been in my closet for weeks so I was happy to give it some sun!

Weekend Recap

We had a great time visiting my mom in Tennessee.

On Saturday, church was great. The pastor talked about pushing aside self and letting Christ in your life. We had lunch over a couples' house whose daughter is absolutely adorable (the little one kept trying to hug and kiss her--too cute, but a little aggressive, we may have to work on that). Then I visited with friends I haven't seen in over 5 years--it was the sweetest of reunions.

We wore ourselves out on Sunday, starting with a filling and delicious lunch with more friends at Taco Rock, visiting the Chattanooga Market (it was so hot that frozen lemonade saved our lives) and ending the day with a swim (which the little totally rocked!).

All in all, a good weekend. And now I would like to sleep for about two days.

Shopping for boys is hard work.

It's not so much that there is nothing cute, it's more unfair, especially looking at how many adorable things there are for girls.

A few people have asked me where I find clothes for my son and the answer is just about everywhere. I know there are some mothers in the blog world that dress their babies in $60 onesies and $90 button-ups, but I'm not that mom.

My secret is simple: put your money in specialty pieces (that they don't wear as often)that can last.

The little one's most expensive clothes (expensive as in $35 MAX) are his coats, church clothes and special occasion shoes.

I've been blessed to receive so many clothes for him from family and friends-which is a huge help because I can spend my money on the special clothes.

I LOVE hand me downs. Some mothers turn their noses at it, because their faded and not as crisp as brand new, but I look at it as the perfect outfits to lounge in, visit grandma, or play with cousins in the backyard. That way when he comes home (after hanging with daddy all day) with dried food stains on his clothes--you wont fret.

I also do my best to take care of his special clothes or anything I want to save for our next child. This means treating stains as soon as possible and bringing him a change of clothes so he's not spending all day in the more expensive/special items.

My favorite stores are TJ-Maxx, Marshalls and Ross because you get name brand clothes for a non name brand price. But you have to search and visit often, because they don't have as many options.

My favorite special-stuff stores are H&M (they have great deals too), Ralph Lauren (outlets) and Gap.

Lately I've been thinking alot about the future for my family. I've seriously begun looking into getting back into the work force full time.

I miss the full (uninterrupted) concentration that a 9-5 brings, but I'm also very nervous about leaving the little one.

Every time I turn on the news I go crazy with thoughts of all the bad things that could happen...but I also know that my faith and trust resides with God.

Three Lovely Shots:

1. My sweet little Sophie. I know you don't hear much about her anymore, but she's still here feeling a little neglected and dealing with being pulled and tugged by the little one. poor baby.

Random Items I'm LOVING now!

1. Nivea cream: This has become my absolute FAVORITE primer. I just started using it this past month and now I can't live without it.

2. The Civil Wars: AMAZING!! I am currently obsessed with the song, I've got this friend But pretty much all their songs are obsess-worthy.

3. Seche Vite top coat: My sister-in-law referred me to this awesome top coat and I am in love. I am the absolute worst when it comes to polishing my nails. If you look at most of my photos you'll see chipped and smudged polish--the sad thing is for most of those pictures, I just did the polish! But lately I've slowed down and tried to do a better job and the top coat just makes it work. I've already got a couple of, "Girl, when did you nails done?" Score!!

4. Retro Camera App for my Samsung: Before I report on any app, I must admit I am a Blackberry lover! Blackberry is just in my blood, but I'm also not opposed to trying new things. So here we are; and I'm still working on loving the phone, but I am smitten with the retro camera app. I use it all the time.

5. Bath and Body Works' Sea island cotton fragrance: I am not the biggest fan of bath and body works' fragrances only because they don't last very long on me. But I love, love, love this scent; its so fresh and sweet. Because the price point is so perfect I can use the wash, lotion and spray (as much as I want) after a shower right before bed and I feel all clean and sweet (the husband likes the scent too).
This also saves me from using up my Chanel Coco Mademoiselle!

6. Jane Carter moisturizing shampoo and conditioner: Ever since I colored my hair I've been on the hunt for the perfect moisturizing duo. I washed my hair at my mother's house and she had Jane Carter and now I'm in love! I'm actually heading to the store in just a bit to pick up my own. The conditioner leaves my hair feeling so soft-I can skip the leave-in every now and then.

I changed my hair....again!

And I ~~think I~~ need another change. I've only worn it for a week or so and I think it's a little too much for me right now (because who knows how I'll feel tomorrow).

I like to change my hair, but sometimes the inconsistency is just a little tiring. I'm screaming, crying, praying for some micro braids. I know they're not as popular anymore. But the idea of waking up for the next 3 months to already done hair, is just, just the sweetest thing I've ever heard.

I've worn them before (here) and I love the way the look and how easy they are. I can't think of anything else that would be easier.

Any other suggestions?

Style wise I've been SO uninspired!! Usually a couple of blog searches and a dress up session fixes the problem. But nothing is working.

My closet is filled with absolutely nothing and even the thrift stores, the mecca of inspiration, had nothing for me.

So today, I just threw on one of the most ifey outfits I could think of. I needed to shock myself out of my style comma.

There were times I'd see myself in the mirror and think-- I LOVE IT! and then there were times when I'd think, "What in the world is wrong with my eyes today?"

Now that the day has ended I am still wondering if I will ever wear this again.

But all in all I'm glad I did it, glad I took the risk and dressed exactly how I felt...just a little crazy(at least for me anyway).

Hey guys! How was your weekend? Mine was super busy. I was in house cleaning terror all day Friday (still fighting the battle today), then off to South Carolina for campmeeting Saturday, then prepared and celebrated father's day for the husband, brother-in-law, and father-in-law.

I am beat.

Which is why the weekend left me no energy to post yesterday. please forgive.

I've been working on a new layout for Linka Living and a new post series, Beau Styles starting next week. I'm pretty excited.

We are still making the birthday rounds. It seems we all got knocked up around the same time, so summer will be birthday season in my neck of the woods.

The little one surprises me everyday. On this particular day his shyness and complete fear of water threw me for a loop! He loves bath time and has lots of fun in our kiddie pool at home, but at this party, you would think the water was lava.

I was a little embarrased, because it was so unexpected. I had him in his cute star trunks and I figured he looked the part, water would be no problem! Wrong, wrong wrong!

Now I am determined to get him back in the water!

How was your child's first water experience?

It wasn't until after I was dressed, in the car, on the way to downtown Atlanta that the husband turned to me and said, "babe, that outfit would be perfect for the 4th of July." Argh...he's right!

Oh well, it was still cute today. I was so happy when I spotted this skirt while thrifting and then a little sad that it was a tad too big, then happy again when I realized a belt (and/or alteration) would do the trick! Yay thrift store!!!

Now I'm wondering what I will wear for the 4th of July...probably do jeans and a t-shirt. What about you, any special holiday looks in the works?

You wouldn't believe how much has happened over the weekend. God has been working in our lives. We have had a tough couple years and when God moves in your life like he did for us...you can't help but shout Hallelujah!! Thank you Jesus!!

It seems my shouting carried out through Monday especially after I tasted the deliciousness that is Tin Drum.

I have been craving Thai food ever since we left Huntsville, AL and had yet to find a place that quenched that craving until today.

Tonight, I will sleep dreaming of the next time we meet Tin Drum! I ♥ U!!

Over the weekend we attended the sweetest wedding. The husband and I kept talking about how thick the love was during that wedding!

I was one of the hostess so we were in gray ( for which this dress came in handy--worn before here). The colors were gorgeous and vibrant and the food was delicious.

It's so hard to believe that we are growing up.

Every time I attend a wedding of one of my closest friends, it's like, are we really here already?! No more giggling by the lockers, sneaking out on school trips, wearing matching shirts....

My sister told me she tried to give me this dress a while back, but I declined it. I'm not sure what I was smoking when I made that decision! I love this dress!

It has been so unbelievably HOT these past few days it's a drain just to get dressed and walk out your house. This dress is perfect for these scorchers because it's not too tight and it's shape allows for the breeze to cool me down.

(It's also vacation hint #2 for the husband)

The Girls are were back in town...

Over the weekend my girls came to town for sweet baby Kennedy's blessing. I was so excited because for the first time since my wedding all of my bridesmaids/best gal pals were together laughing and fussing....it was truly just like old times.

I miss them so much.

The only difference now is that some of us are professionals, married, dating, mothers.

I love watching the husbands and boyfriends when we all get together. The face my husband is making (pictured above) is a face of bewilderment and a slight annoyance; "how is it that you guys can all talk at the same time and understand what each other is saying?!" That's just how we are and have always been.

I know he'd prefer to be at home on the computer in the silence of our living room, but guess what? sometimes husbands don't get to choose. And my girls, no matter how loud and talkative will always be a part of me (not all of me, but a part). I love them.

How is your significant other with your girlfriends. Is he in heaven or hell?

I believe I have found the best cupcake in the world!

The husband and I took a much needed date to lunch and a movie and we saw the cutest little cupcake place. It was so good and pretty- I was in love. After hours of decision agony I went with the peanut butter cup delight!

And now I'm thinking how in the world will I stop myself from getting one every single day.How will I resist?!

The past weekend was filled with emotion for me not just because my son turned one, but little sister graduated from High school.

I remember when she was born and I would change her diapers and feed her tomatoes (she loved tomatoes) I remember falling asleep anxious for her mom to drop her off the next morning. I remember everyone calling her my mini me. I remember her following me around at church and I loved every minute of it!

Now she's all grown up and off to college. So yes, if you must know I did cry. I'm just so proud of her and who she has grown to be.

Last week Friday we did a mini photoshoot with my goddaughter and the little one. I took a few snapshots and realized that my hat must go off to photographers who work well with children. We had a rough time and they belonged to us.

Regardless, I still managed to get some really nice shots. These two are so adorable.

My bestie and I still get asked if we planned it (the kids only 7 days apart) but we didnt--if we did it wouldn't be as perfect.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that they are now considered toddlers. They really grow so fast!

How was your Memorial day weekend? Mine was too busy to cover in this one post so I figured this week will be the "memorial day weekend recap" on Linka Living.

The husband and I are still recovering from the little one's birthday party. It was so much work, but in the end all 100% worth it.

There were a few things that fell through the cracks so I thought I'd share my lessons learned.

1. Photos and video are vitally important (maybe even the most important): I was so busy running around that I forgot to get footage. My husband did a little recording but someone should have been assigned to that.

2. Have fun: When I usually host parties I am working right up until the last guest leaves because I'm so focused on everyone having a good time. This past weekend I didn't do that. At a certain point I stopped working and sat my butt down to play with kids and chat with the guest, it was so much fun.

3. Schedule the party appropriately: This past weekend was the busiest ever, between my little sister's graduation, my brother and family flying in from Cali, the husband's bible work commitment, and my son's birthday party--I got a total of 12 hrs sleep for the weeekend, so I wasn't as sharp as I could've been.

4. Have back up help: Because the weekend was so busy a lot, most of our helpers backed out or came late. It got so bad I was soliciting early arrivals to blow up balloons (only family of course but still very tacky)!

5. Kiss the cook: though the stress level was high, the husband did such a great job with the grill and being my go-to guy! I don't think I told him enough how much I love and appreciate him.

I think our next big one will be for his 5th birthday.

My only question is, "Why are you 1 today?!" I thought I told you to stay at 6 months...for just a little while longer.

I am so in love with the person you are becoming. You have made me a better person just by being.

When I'm tempted to feel overcome with sadness, I hold you in my arms and you are so perfect, I can't be sad. You are my greatest blessing.

At times I feel undeserving, but then when you reach out your hands for me and say mama, I realize undeserving or not--you want me and love me and trust me unconditionally.

Over the weekend I attended my goddaughter's first birthday party! We had so much fun at the luau themed party. This is the second birthday party we've been to for the summer, the first one was a Hello Kitty themed party for a beautiful little girl also turning 1.

I'm still planning and setting up for the little one's first birthday party and I have so many ideas that I have to remind myself he's only one.

I researched online and they say the average first birthday party is from $200-$500 for about 20-50 people.

We're doing a joint party with my niece also turning one and I'd like to have mainly family around and let the kids have some fun.

So to my mother's, what did you do for your little one's 1st birthday? Did you go BIG or SMALL?

A few of you have emailed me with questions and I believe I've responded to each you (if I haven't please don't be mad I promise I will respond). So I thought I'd share those questions and answers with everyone.

Q: What software do you use to create your photo lists and collages?

A: I use Microsoft power point for the photo list and publisher for the collages. After I create each. I save as a jpg.

Q: How do you get your photos large on your blog?

A: I don't use the blogger uploader. I use photobucket. I love it. It's very easy to use, just adds an extra step to your regular routine. Once I upload my photos to photobucket I resize them to fit my blog and copy the html code and paste in my post under the html tab. If it's a little confusing and you want to know more email me I'd be happy to walk to you through it!

Q: What camera do you use?

A: I use a Canon PowerShot S3 IS, I am currently in the process of getting a new camera. I hope it works out soon.

Q: What Thrift stores do you go to?

A: I live in McDonough, GA so I pretty much frequent all the value villages and goodwills.

Q: Who takes your photos?

A: I usually beg the husband when he's not working to take my photos. But my sister takes some too. When the little one gets old enough I'm sure he'll be snapping a few as well.
